See God’s Goodness When “Plowing” Through

“But Jesus told him, ‘Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and then looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God,'” (Luke 9:62 NLT) and Jesus said “The fields are already white for harvest” (John 4:35) and 1 Corinthians 9:10 speaks of plowing in hope….

When things transpire in ways that we can’t fully understand, we need to keep faith in the goodness of God and the things which He has planned.

Sometimes we become focused on bad news or a loss, instead of meditating on Jesus’ victory over Satan through the cross.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding.  Fully trust in Jesus, and don’t be unnerved by the devil’s grandstanding.

He wants you to contemplate disasters that he has brought about–thereby building up unbelief and causing you to doubt.

And to fuel your fears, he’ll get you to dwell on those things that seem fearful.  He doesn’t want you to “count it all joy” or, with the joy of the Lord, to be cheerful.

Joseph of the Old Testament was stalwart in keeping faith in God, whose hand was kept upon him through the difficult pathways he trod.

God sent an angel to the apostle Paul, who was on a ship that was in a fierce storm, to reassure him and the others on board when troubles continued to form.

Jesus kept faith in His Father while carrying out what He’d asked Him to do.  For the joy ahead that He “saw,” He trusted God’s guidance to help Him through.

Just as a farmer, despite a rain shower, may continue to work in the field, let’s plow on through, with faith in God, knowing the profit which that will yield.

And if circumstantial “rains” get too rough, we’ll find shelter in Jesus’ name.  It’s the high tower for the safety of those for whom He came….

all those who believe in and have put their faith firmly and forever in Him!  As we follow the Light of the World, our own lights in this world will not dim.

The Way to Please God

So many religions speak of various ways to address pleasing God all of your days.

Five times a day, you could be down on your knees, with prayers to the god you hope to please.

But, really, these things are ritual merely and can’t please Him, no matter if done so very sincerely.

But there is a way to come to God, and it’s by looking to the road that Jesus has trod.

He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He paved the way for you through much strife…

released upon Him as He went to the cross, where He suffered in pain so you wouldn’t be lost

to the God who loves you and calls to you now to embrace His Son, Jesus, to Whom, one day, every knee will bow.

But only grace, through faith, is involved—all works are in vain. Through Jesus’ righteousness, our salvation is made plain.

You may want to fall to your knees when you recognize all that was done by a God who loved so greatly, He gave His only Son.

Strong in the Lord

The Lord’s Magnificent Rainbow

“I have placed My rainbow in the clouds….”

Lord, how I love to see the rainbow.
It seems one of the closest things
to You directly speaking to us upon earth
of Your faithfulness–the reminder it brings.

And who but You could have created its design,
with pastels or bright colors displayed,
in a beautiful arc in the heavens,
following the life-giving rains that You’ve made.

It’s always magnificent–the sight of a rainbow;
and a double one is especially thrilling.
Though it usually doesn’t last for a very long time,
it reminds of a covenant You’re still fulfilling.

Though the rainbow fades, leaving only a memory,
it speaks, too, of Your love, that doesn’t fade–
for You gave your Son, Jesus, as Savior for us all.
Those who believe, find the greatest covenant You’ve made.

Noah, the Flood, and God’s Rainbow

“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.” Genesis 6:8

The people on earth, in Noah’s time, were living wicked lives–their behavior was depraved. God was sorry that He had even made man, yet had a plan for Noah and his family to be saved.

He’d decided to destroy both men and beasts through an immense flood of waters and rain that He would send. He gave Noah instructions to build an ark…for his protection until the worldwide flooding would end.

Noah, a just man, who walked with God, believed that God would do what He had said. He received God’s details for construction of the ark and then diligently followed them in going ahead.

Noah was to house animals of all the various kinds–to enter the ark for preservation. The whole endeavor may have seemed daunting, but Noah obeyed without hesitation.

Birds and creeping things also were to be brought in and all kinds of foods to be stored. This would be their provision, to sustain them well, for the days that they’d be on board.

When all was ready, Noah and his family entered the ark, and God shut them in for their stay. After the seventh day, the fountains of the great deep were broken up, the heavens poured rain, and the ark was soon to be underway.

The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose up high above the earth.  It moved about safely on the surface of the waters, having been built by God’s specific wisdom of the highest worth.

The rain was on the earth forty days and forty nights; and for one hundred fifty days, the waters prevailed. The hills and highest mountains were covered–every living thing perished as the predicted destruction was unveiled.

So God destroyed all living things on the face of the ground–men and cattle, creeping things, and birds of the air.  But God, of course, remembered Noah and the “life” on the ark–then sent a wind to pass over the earth everywhere.

This was to help the waters to subside, and God stopped the fountains and restrained the rain’s downpour.  The ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat–just ahead was God’s plan to restore. 

The tops of the mountains began to be seen–Noah opened the window that he had made. He sent out a raven, and then sent a dove, to test water levels during the flooding’s downgrade.

The first time the dove returned to Noah, for she’d found no place for her foot to rest. On a second venture, she returned to him with a fresh olive leaf with which her surveying had been blessed.

Another seven days passed, and he sent her out again; but, this time, she didn’t come back to the ark. When the waters were entirely dried up from the earth, God told Noah that it was time to disembark.

Grateful to God, Noah built an altar there, presenting burnt offerings to the LORD who had seen them through. The aromas were soothing to God, and then He said, that such a vast flood was something He’d never again do.

(“Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma. Then the Lord said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.” Genesis 8:20-21)

“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease,” God said. Then He blessed Noah and his sons, giving instructions on living, for the days that would be ahead.

“Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him: ‘And as for me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, and every living creature that is with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth. Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.’

“And God said: ‘This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.’ And God said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.'” Genesis 9:8-17

So we’ve read in Genesis about the great flood–Noah and his family survived in the ark for many nights and days. As a preacher of righteousness, he must have warned others to turn to God; but the people didn’t change their ways. Noah had been obedient to God in building the ark, in anticipation of the coming flood. Today, there’s an “Ark,” into which anyone can enter through repentance and by faith in Jesus’ name and His shed blood.

The Sky, Earth, and Sea do Speak, oh Lord, of Thee

“To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.” Psalm 19:1 NKJV

The wondrous sky, the earth, and sea…do speak to us, oh Lord, of Thee. Father, Son, and Holy Ghost…of You, creation makes its boast.

Wonderful God of love, You forgive us of all of our sins.  In receiving Your Son as Savior, a new life, with His peace, begins.  You have made Jesus Christ the Lord over all of the earth.  We’re thankful to You for Your mercy and for the precious gift of the new birth.

Outpourings of Love

A certain woman of the city heard that Jesus was at the home of Simon, a Pharisee. So she came with an alabaster flask of ointment–her sins had weighed her down very heavily. Her tears washed Jesus’ feet, which she kissed and wiped with her hair–then anointed them with the oil–all tokens of the love she had come there to share.

Simon’s thought was that Jesus should have known that she was a woman to shun. If Jesus was truly a prophet, he would not have permitted her because of the things she’d done. Jesus then told him a story of two debtors, freely forgiven of debts of lesser and greater amounts. It was an explanation to Simon of a sinner’s gratefulness–her debt of sin was large (and, therefore, so was her love) by all accounts.

Jesus expressed appreciation for her kisses and for the tears that she had shed. “Your sins are forgiven” and “Your faith has saved you; go in peace,” He said. Those who sat at the table with Him began to discuss that, saying “Who is this?” His forgiveness of her sins was an authoritative statement they really couldn’t dismiss.

In another narrative, six days before Passover, the scriptures tell of Mary–who used spikenard, a costly oil–the fragrance of which, the entire house would carry. After supper, there in Bethany, she anointed Jesus’ feet, also wiping them with her hair. Judas then asked why the oil hadn’t been sold and the money been given to the poor–not that he actually did care.

Jesus told Judas to let her alone for she had kept the oil for His burial day. “For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always,” was what He had to say.

A similar occurrence at the house of Simon the leper, Matthew and Mark record,
was that of a woman who took spikenard, pouring it, this time, upon the head of Jesus, her Lord. There were some who, like Judas, criticized her, saying that the oil might have been sold for the poor. But Jesus said she had done this for His burial, speaking of her with grace, and that in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, she would forever have a place.

Today, God is pouring out His love and the Holy Spirit upon each open heart. May we fill our own “alabaster jars,” with love for Him, and eagerly do our part. There’s a world of people Jesus died for, and many are in great need. Guide and strengthen us, Lord, as we seek to be Your servants, caring with both word and deed.

We thank You for Your great sacrifice; we thank You for Your steadfast love. We appreciate so much what it cost You to visit us from heaven above.

What time is it?

“I will bless the Lord at all times, His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” Psalm 34:1

When troubles disappoint, overwhelm, or sometimes shock, remember, then, what time it is–it’s always Praise o’clock!

As much-loved members of the Good Shepherd’s flock, His goodness makes us praise Him all around the clock.

After praise and a mighty shout, the walls of Jericho fell down flat. The people followed Joshua’s instructions, and that was that!

When Daniel faced the lions in their den ’til morning light, an angel at Praise o’clock came there to keep their jaws shut tight.

Paul and Silas were imprisoned; their feet were placed in stocks; but they just sang with all their hearts, and made that prison rock!

If your prayer is for a miracle, but it seems to be “out of stock,” don’t give up, don’t give in–look at the time, it’s still Praise o’clock.

Surely when the way seems hard, there’s an answer to any “block,” for continually and forever, the correct time is Praise o’clock!

It’s in serious times or circumstances that it’s exactly right to praise God in expectation of His help. At the same time, we take our authority, through the blood and name of Jesus, over evil spirits that would hinder or harm in any circumstance, as we’re seated with Christ in the heavenly places, far above them. (Reference Ephesians 1:18-23 and 2:4-10)

“What time is it?” can also make us contemplate the time of Jesus’ return. We’re to occupy until He comes…

“And as they heard these things, he (Jesus) added and spake a parable, because he was nigh to Jerusalem, and because they thought that the kingdom of God should immediately appear. He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, ‘Occupy till I come.'” Luke 19:11-13 KJV

From Adam to the Last Adam

“Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.'” Genesis 2:15-17 NKJV

The first man, Adam, knew he should not partake from that tree, though its fruit was pleasant to the sight. Because of his doing so, God sent a Redeemer to be born as a man, “the last Adam,” to make things right.

Despite Adam and Eve’s sin of disobedience, God planned for their redemption from the fall. We can certainly see how He CAME THROUGH for them, for Jesus took sin’s penalty for them and for us all.

When we consider God’s love, amidst life’s battles, we must believe that God will COME THROUGH for us–with Him, we can’t lose. He’s no respecter of persons, but will be the caring orchestrator of our own breakthroughs.

Just as the devil contradicted what God had said when he tempted Eve to disobey…he may tell you that God can’t be fully trusted–that you can’t cast your cares on Him; but that’s an evil lie to be cast away….

Believe that God will always COME THROUGH for you…He sent, for us, a personal Savior, who defeated that foe.  As the scripture in Psalm 107:2 states, “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so!”
